Y+ contemporary is pleased to present Larissa Tiggelers’ MFA thesis exhibition, to be and nearly without.
Colour is the fulcrum of Larissa Tiggelers’ abstract painting practice. She withdraws into hours of mixing colour, dislocating colour theory from the front of mind in order to embrace the unknowability of colour and enter a place of quiet contemplation. Her paintings offer the same quiet, introspective space she accesses through their making. This is articulated in the colour palette and discernible care enacted on the paintings’ surface. Colour is foregrounded through spatial ambiguity, while gestural authorship is minimized through the soft, even application of paint.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Larissa Tiggelers will graduate from the MFA program at the University of Guelph in the spring of 2017. In 2005, she began her post-secondary education at Grande Prairie Regional College, later transferring to the Alberta College of Art and Design where she received a BFA with distinction in 2010. Along with maintaining a rigorous studio practice she has served in a number of positions in Calgary-based artist-run centres, most recently as the Director of Stride Gallery. Tiggelers is commercially represented by Jarvis Hall Gallery in Calgary.
