ABOUT THE PROJECT

In 2018, Y+ contemporary transitioned out of their brick and mortar space on Morningside Avenue, just north of Sheppard Avenue in Scarborough, Ontario. Founded in 2015, the artist-run studio and gallery fostered community building by supporting emerging practitioners and discourse on suburban spaces. As Y+ prepared to transition to a project-based model, they returned to a space that had long been of interest: the nearby hydro corridor, then known as the Gatineau Hydro Corridor. Here, much like the rest of Scarborough, major shifts in the landscape were set to occur.

In collaboration with independent curator Katie Lawson, Dorica and Tiffany of Y+ invited SHATTERED MOON ALLIANCE (Christina Battle and Serena Lee) to develop a project that would take the hydro corridor, soon to be called The Meadoway, as a point of departure. The Meadoway is a revitalization project led by the Toronto Region Conservation Authority to transform the hydro corridor into one of Canada’s largest linear urban parks, connecting downtown Toronto to Rouge National Urban Park.

The hydro corridors that run throughout the area are unique public spaces that prompted us as organizers to ask questions around access to nature, recreation, and community gathering space. These questions increasingly led to considerations of place-making, and the experiences had in certain kinds of delineated spaces, linking the hydro corridor to suburban plazas and shopping malls.

The resulting project, a virtual audio-tour, evolved out of years of dialogue between the artists, organizers and contributors around these questions. As the pandemic further shifted relationships to time and public space, the project became a wormhole all its own.

We invite you to meander WHEREELSEELSEWHERE.
